To evaluate each state's infrastructure, our Top States study considers not just roads, bridges, ports and airports. The state broadband office notes that it is the nation's ninth-largest allocation per capita. The state's power grid is among America's least reliable, according to U.S. Department of Energy data. The severe weather means power outages are frequent as well. Since then, the power outages have persisted, making Maine's grid among the worst in the nation.

Opinion: Credibility is the key at Trump trial

The idea that Cohen talked to Trump about Daniels on that call “was a lie,” Blanche alleged. Moreover, my experience has been that juries don’t decide based upon one moment — they base their judgment on an overall view.”There were allegedly three parties aware of the scheme to conceal the real reason Trump paid Cohen more than $400,000 in supposed legal fees: Trump, Cohen and Allen Weisselberg, then-chief financial officer of the Trump Organization. “Weisselberg could be the linchpin to validate Cohen’s claims about Trump agreeing to reimburse him through Trump Organization, as a business expense,” wrote attorney Stacy Schneider. Trump seems to be tempted to go mano a mano and show that he is better fit to be commander-in-chief. The new requirement for GOP politicians wanting to demonstrate their loyalty to Trump seems to be visiting the Manhattan courthouse where he’s on trial.

It’s just the latest sign that the pilgrimage to Trump’s criminal trial in New York has become a new litmus test for Trump loyalty inside the GOP ahead of November. CNN —House Speaker Mike Johnson is not waiting for ex-President Donald Trump to be judged by a jury of his peers. Vance, a possible VP contender, was there along with Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a famed former college football coach. The speaker’s appearance is different, given the constitutional heft of his office and the figurative connotations it evokes. Some experts have questioned whether any other defendant besides Trump would face the same indictment at the hands of a prosecutor, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat. Trump is exercising his right to mount a defense and is considered innocent until proven guilty.

The trove of investigation documents released Thursday includes a timeline of images from Mohamed Barakat’s apartment and surveillance cameras that map his movements before the July 14 shooting as officers investigated a routine traffic crash. Barakat shot and killed one Fargo police officer and wounded two other officers and a bystander before a fourth officer killed him in an exchange of gunfire. Images taken from video on the night before the shooting show a tactical vest on Barakat's apartment floor, Barakat checking his door while holding a gun and a cellphone, and later assembling a short-barreled shotgun. Much of his subsequent movements involved driving around Fargo, returning several times to his garage and at least twice to his apartment. A fourth officer, Zach Robinson, fired back with a 9 mm handgun, shooting the clip of Barakat's rifle and effectively disabling it.

Oil prices gain $1 on strong U.S. economic growth
  + stars: | 2024-01-25 | by ( Spencer Kimball | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices gained steam Thursday on stronger than expected U.S. economic growth, stimulus in China and falling domestic crude stockpiles. The U.S. economy grew 3.3% in the fourth quarter of 2023, soundly beating the Wall Street consensus estimate of 2%. Commercial crude oil stockpiles in the U.S. declined by 9.2 million barrels during the week ended Jan. 19, according to the Energy Information Agency. The stockpile decline is due to U.S. production taking a hit from a winter storm earlier this month, according to John Evans with PVM Oil Associates. U.S. production declined by 1 million barrels per day to 12.3 million bpd last week, according to estimates from the EIA.

Nikki Haley Surges Into Second Place in Iowa Poll
  + stars: | 2023-10-30 | by ( Susan Milligan | Oct. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +4 min
Nikki Haley is surging in support among Iowa Republicans and is now tied for second place in the battle for the GOP nomination in the Hawkeye State, according to a poll released Monday morning. Haley has the first-choice backing of 16% of Iowa Republicans – the same as Florida Gov. The poll was conducted before Trump's vice president, Mike Pence, dropped out of the race on Saturday, saying "this is not my time." Even before the realignment, Pence was struggling, having dropped from 6% support in August to 2% in the current poll. The Iowa poll reflects a new political reality for the 2024 elections, with the nominations for both major political parties appearing to be sewn up with two and a half months to go before the first nominating contest.

But the public’s leverage is weak, the political dynamics are complex and the alternatives are fewer than they used to be. The upshot was an enduring advantage for internet retailers over bricks-and-mortar stores. Adding insult to injury, the big internet retailers have taken great advantage of a communal resource. The real estate that Amazon and other vendors require to make their deliveries is not private but public. We faced a smaller version of this problem with the surge of urban lunch trucks a decade ago.

Ron DeSantis for defending Florida's new public school standards that teach that some Black people benefited from slavery because it taught them useful skills. "But this is one more part of a fact pattern of Ron DeSantis being mean and hateful." A few of DeSantis' Republican opponents, including Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and former New Jersey Gov. Doug Burgum, another 2024 GOP contender, told NBC News "it's an absurd idea" to think that slavery benefited Black people. Asked about the incident on Sunday, Hurd said: "I knew there were going to be people that didn't like it."

CNN —For any Republican presidential candidate not named Donald Trump, making the first primary debate on August 23 in Milwaukee is an essential obstacle to overcome. The Republican National Committee set minimum viability requirements that numerous candidates are having trouble meeting. But the FEC – which is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans – often struggles to agree on enforcement actions. But that perhaps is not surprising – given how large Trump, his former boss-turned-nemesis, looms over the hard-core Republican base. How is Trump making money these days?

TORONTO, June 9 (Reuters) - Ruling conservatives in the Canadian province of New Brunswick this week made changes to rules for schools as they sought to "recognize the role of parents" in questions around gender identity, but have faced pushback from within their own party. On Thursday, provincial Education Minister Bill Hogan announced changes to that policy. Another change to the policy removes a reference to students being allowed to participate in activities "consistent with their gender identity". Indiana has enacted a law requiring teachers to tell parents when students ask to be called by a new name or different pronoun. The majority of those bills specifically affect transgender people, touching on nearly every aspect of a transgender person's public life. And the vulnerability of most Republican state legislators right now is in the primary, if at all," Allen said. The bill he signed on Wednesday also adds obstacles for transgender adults and grants courts jurisdiction in child custody battles in some cases involving gender-affirming care. Demonstrators swarmed the Texas House, leading lawmakers to send a bill banning gender-affirming care back to committee. In Montana, protests contributed to the censure of transgender state Representative Zooey Zephyr, who was banned from the state House floor by Republican legislators.
